Reimagining Access to Cultural Experiences

When The Library Network (TLN) partnered with to revamp its Michigan Activity Pass (MAP) program, the vision was bold: to modernize how patrons connect with cultural experiences across the state. Within six months of launch, MAP saw a 40% increase in online reservations and a 60% spike in mobile engagement, directly supporting TLN’s mission to promote equitable access to educational and recreational opportunities.

To deliver on this mission, LocalHop developed a fully customized, mobile-responsive ticket reservation system and modernized MAP’s brand identity. These upgrades didn’t just make the program more functional—they made it a more visible, inclusive, and essential community resource.

The success wasn’t just digital. Library staff and patrons alike praised the system’s improved usability, while TLN’s promotion of the program increased participation across the board. One of LocalHop’s designers was even featured in a TLN publication—a testament to the visibility and value the project brought to both partners.

Community-Focused Innovation at Scale

From day one, LocalHop set out to deliver a ticketing platform that didn’t just meet technical specs—but genuinely improved the way patrons interact with Michigan’s rich array of venues. The revamped MAP system now allows patrons to search by location, destination name, or ZIP code, with advanced filters like ADA compliance, kid-friendliness, and availability by date. Patrons can instantly reserve passes, save them to their phone’s wallet, and receive reminders—streamlining the experience and encouraging higher follow-through.

On the backend, LocalHop integrated powerful tech tools such as Node.js, Axios, Esri (to reduce API costs), and Google Maps API. While transitioning from the legacy Plymouth Rocket software, the team also tackled the challenge of data migration without disrupting service. By phasing imports and rigorously testing all links and features, they ensured a smooth transition for both patrons and administrators.

The impact was immediate and measurable: increased awareness, easier navigation, and greater usage across participating libraries. In fact, the intuitive UX design and location-based search functionality transformed MAP into one of the most effective community engagement tools TLN had ever implemented.

Building with Purpose: Lessons in Collaboration and Growth

The MAP project wasn’t just a product launch—it was a lesson in strategic collaboration and design thinking. Despite initial hurdles such as wallet integration and high API costs, LocalHop’s agile, focused approach allowed the team to pivot quickly and maintain momentum. By switching from Google to Esri for address suggestions, for example, LocalHop cut monthly API costs from $2,000+ to under $300—freeing up resources to reinvest in functionality and support.

Team alignment was key. LocalHop’s designers, developers, and project managers worked in unison with TLN’s internal stakeholders, using mockups and real-time demos to keep everyone engaged and informed. The result was a system that not only met the technical requirements outlined in TLN’s request for proposal (RFP),  but also exceeded expectations in usability and impact.

Today, the Michigan Activity Pass platform stands as a powerful example of what happens when technology serves people—creating real access, encouraging exploration, and reinforcing the role libraries play in bringing communities together.

As libraries and municipalities seek new ways to engage the public, the MAP project offers a scalable blueprint. The platform’s success proves that community-centered technology—designed with empathy, precision, and partnership—can transform how people interact with the resources around them.

LocalHop’s approach, rooted in listening to stakeholders and iterating with purpose, continues to evolve. But the core philosophy remains unchanged: build tools that empower, connect, and uplift.
