Portage, MI

Portage, Michigan is a city in Kalamazoo County, located in Southwest Michigan. The first people to occupy the area were the Pottawatomie Native Americans. It was later settled by European Americans and called “Dry Prairie”. According to the 2010 census, the population was 46,292. In the 1880s, Portage was the “Celery City” because its soil had optimal conditions for growing the vegetable. The city is known for its historical parks and trails which can be easily accessed by walking, cycling, or canoeing. Some things to do in the city are Air Zoo, Portage Creek Bicentennial Park, and the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail.
